A band of eight gets the job done for PC

PROVIDENCE — For the eight lucky players currently in Keno Davis’ rotation, nothing could be more enjoyable.

Eight Friars played 20 or more minutes in last night’s 100-82 win over Dartmouth, and seven scored in double figures. Davis clearly gives everyone free rein to fire away at a moment’s notice, especially from behind the 3-point line, where six different players threw up 3-balls. PC made 7 of its 23 threes, with Jeff Xavier and Marshon Brooks canning three apiece.

“We want to just run,” said Brooks. “If you go four, five minutes and don’t ask to come out, Keno says, ‘You’re not playing hard enough.’ ”

Asked if he gets tired, the sophomore from Atlanta quickly answered, “Yes.”

Davis says he’d like to extend his rotation to nine players, but right now he’s a bit restricted. Sophomore Alex Kellogg is recovering from a mild knee injury and was not available last night. The good news is that Kellogg stretched and warmed up for the first time in several days and could be back by Saturday’s game against Maine. Davis said Kellogg would be his ninth man right now, if healthy.

That leaves two other scholarship players, forwards Greedy Peterson and Bilal Dixon. Peterson is a sophomore who did not play in either exhibition game and is a likely red-shirt. Davis said last night, for the first time, that he’s also considering red-shirting Dixon, who is a freshman. Freshmen are able to participate in exhibition games, and Dixon looked more than capable in the two games, but he was held out of the first two regular-season contests.

If Kellogg returns, as expected, Davis may go with just nine players in games and work Dixon and Peterson in practice sessions all season.

Six points for Rufful

David Rufful, the former Bishop Hendricken star who played at Northfield Mt. Hermon last season, is now a freshman at Dartmouth. Rufful played 13 minutes last night and looked good handling the ball and battling off the boards. He scored six points and fouled out.

Dunk well received

The rehabbed Dunkin’ Donuts Center has been well received by the PC fans, although the vast majority of students must have forgotten that there was a game last night. The PC administration is pleased with how the work in the building came out, and last night athletic director Bob Driscoll and school president the Rev. Brian Shanley thanked several leaders of the project during a first-half timeout. The Convention Center chairman, Dave Duffy, and two of his commissioners, Dave Gavitt (the Hall of Fame PC coach) and Bernie Buonanno, were saluted, as were executive director Jim McCarville and the Dunk’s director, Larry Lepore.
