LONG BEACH, Calif. — Dwain Williams, a backup guard who averaged 11.0 points and 2.3 assists in 21 games for Providence College last season, is transferring to Long Beach State.
Coach Dan Monson said yesterday that Williams has signed a national letter-of-intent with the 49ers.
The 6-footer from San Diego will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out next season.
“Dwain Williams is a great addition to our program,” Monson said in a statement. “His success in the Big East Conference demonstrates that he is a proven high-level point guard that will help solidify our backcourt.”
Williams said he wanted to come back to California to be near his family. He averaged 7.5 points and 1.7 assists in 25 games as a freshman at PC.
His decision comes approximately five weeks after Keno Davis was named new coach of the Friars. It is not known if his arrival had anything to do with Williams’ decision.
