McDermott's football glories recalled

08:09 AM EST on Monday, January 28, 2008

There was an excellent story in yesterday’s Syracuse Post-Standard on Geoff McDermott’s final football game as a high school star at New Rochelle (N.Y.) High. With McDermott at quarterback and Ray Rice (the Rutgers star) at running back, New Rochelle advanced to the 2004 Class AA state title game against Syracuse Christian Brothers Academy at the Carrier Dome.

New Rochelle lost, 41-35, in a game that ranks among the best prep playoff games in state history. McDermott ran for a TD and threw for another, but was outdueled by CBA’s Greg Paulus, now the point guard at Duke. Paulus passed for 371 yards and three TDs. While McDermott and Paulus chose to play basketball in college, 12 other players in the game moved on to Division I football scholarships.
