PC's McDermott is considering playing football at Boston College

PROVIDENCE – Geoff McDermott, the Providence College basketball forward who just completed his eligibility, may not be done with his collegiate athletic career.
McDermott is considering exercising an NCAA rule that allows him to play a different sport in a fifth season of eligibility and his eyes are turning to the football field. He has contacted members of the coaching staff at Boston College and will meet with the Eagles soon. McDermott would have to be accepted in a new school as a graduate student.
McDermott, who was listed at 6-foot-8 and 235 pounds at PC, was a star football player for New Rochelle High in New York’s Westchester County. He led his team to two consecutive Class AA state football title games and was named All-State in football as a senior quarterback.
McDermott was unavailable to comment Friday. He is taking final exams at PC and will graduate on May 12, according to PC assistant athletic director Arthur Parks.
“It is something he is looking into. It is an option he’s looking at,” Parks said Friday.
McDermott is the only player in Friar basketball history to start every game (122) in his career. He averaged 9.2 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He is regarded as one of the top all-around players in PC’s basketball history.
Before he enrolled at PC, McDermott nearly played college football. McDermott was recruited by several schools and offered football scholarships. Most notably, Rutgers, Wisconsin and Syracuse pursued him with coaches mentioning him as a tight end, defensive end or a quarterback. In the end, he chose basketball and picked Providence after visiting Duke and Boston College.
The basketball-to-football route has been traveled by several players in recent years. Greg Paulus, a Duke point guard for the last four years, is set to graduate this month, and the former high school All-American quarterback may play football at either Michigan, Nebraska or Syracuse.
