P-Bruins prevail in opening shootout

PROVIDENCE — The Providence Bruins defeated the Lowell Devils, 4-3, in a shootout last night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

The P-Bruins got goals in regulation from Johnny Boychuk, Byron Bitz and Vladimir Sobotka and in the shootout from Mikko Lehtonen and Martin St. Pierre.

The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at the 8:46 mark of the opening period, while on the power play. Boychuk tallied his first goal of the season with St. Pierre and Martins Karsums getting the assists.

The Devils tied the score with a power-play goal of their own at the 13:54 mark. Jon DiSalvatore scored the goal with Tyler Eckford and Brad Mills recording the assists.

The P-Bruins went into the first period with the lead, scoring another power-play goal at 15:35. This time it was Bitz netting the goal, with Matt Hunwick and Sobotka gaining the assists.

In the second period, the P-Bruins took a two-goal lead at the 2:24 mark. Sobotka tallied the team’s third power-play goal of the game, with Brad Marchand and Bitz getting the assists.

The Devils scored late in the second and third periods to send the game into overtime.

After a scoreless overtime, Lehtonen and St. Pierre scored in the shootout for the P-Bruins, while P-Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask stopped all four shots he faced.
