P-Bruins 5, Wolf Pack 3: Lehtonen scores twice, Sabourin makes 34 saves

PROVIDENCE –– Mikko Lehtonen scored his first two goals of the season and added an assist, and Dany Sabourin made 34 saves as the Providence Bruins defeated the Hartford Wolf Pack, 5-3, before 3,752 fans Friday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

Trent Whitfield, Kirk MacDonald and Brad Marchand had the other Providence goals.

Hartford opened the scoring on a power-play goal by Evgeny Grachev, his first of the season, at 11:48 of the first period. Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau and Paul Crowder were credited with assists.

Providence tied the game at 14:04 while on a power play. Lehtonen left the puck for Jamie Arniel along the boards, and he found Whitfield backdoor, who chipped the puck into the net for his second goal of the season.

The P-Bruins took their first lead at 18:10 when Lehtonen bulled his way to the net and jammed the puck past Wolf Pack goalie Chad Johnson. Andy Wozniewski and Jeff LoVecchio assisted.

Providence took a 3-1 advantage at 8:44 of the second period when MacDonald scored after taking a pass from Guillaume Lefebvre. Andrew Bodnarchuk received the second assist.

The P-Bruins grabbed a 4-1 advantage at the 10:44 mark while on a power play. Whitfield held the puck in the corner and fed it to Wozniewski in front of the net. He took a shot and Lehtonen scored off the rebound.

The Wolf Pack cut Providence’s lead to two goals at 3:17 of the third period as Corey Locke netted his third goal of the season, on a power play, with assists from Patrick Rissmiller and Parenteau.

Providence once again made it a three-goal advantage with its third power-play goal of the game, at 13:51 of the third period. Brad Marchand scored his second of the season, from the slot, after a pass from Vladimir Sobotka. Alain Goulet received the second assist.

Hartford’s Dale Weise closed out the scoring with 10 seconds left, assisted by Crowder and Jordan Owens.

Sabourin stopped 34 shots for the P-Bruins while Johnson made 28 saves for the Wolf Pack. The P-Bruins were 3-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-5 on the penalty kill.

There were three fights in the game, two between Providence’s Adam McQuaid and Hartford’s Dane Byers.

Providence rookie defenseman Rob Kwiet had to be helped off the ice after taking a hit in the third period.

The P-Bruins’ next home game is Sunday at 4:05 p.m. against the Wolf Pack.
