PROVIDENCE — Tuuka Rask recorded his second shutout of the Calder Cup American Hockey League playoffs and the Providence Bruins got goals from four players as the P-Bruins opened up the second-round series against Portland last night with a 4-0 win.
The P-Bruins took a 1-0 advantage at the 14:57 mark of the opening period when Matt Lashoff stole the puck in the neutral zone and flipped it to Pascal Pelletier. Pelletier skated into the Pirates zone and took a shot from the slot, putting the puck into the upper corner of the net for his fourth goal of the post-season.
After leading 1-0 at the first intermission, the P-Bruins took a 2-0 lead when Matt Hunwick passed the puck behind his own net to Sean Curry, who sent it up the boards to T.J. Trevelyan. From the right faceoff circle, he fired a shot past Pirates netminder Mike McKenna for his second goal of the playoffs at the 6:25 mark. Chris Collins stretched the lead to 3-0 at the 14:19 mark when he redirected a shot by Lashoff, giving Collins his first goal of the post-season.
Nate Thompson completed the scoring in the final period at 6:56 after Collins stole the puck behind the net and passed it to him just outside the crease where he was waiting to knock in past McKenna. It was also Thompson’s first goal of the playoffs.
Rask stopped all 28 shots he faced, and on the other side McKenna made 36 saves for the Pirates. The P-Bruins were 4-4 on the penalty kill but were unable to capitalize on any of their 10 power play attempts.
Providence now leads the best-of-seven series 1-0 and faces off against Portland in Game Two today at 4:05 p.m. at The Dunk.
