Hoggan’s o.t. goal wins for P-Bruins

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Jeff Hoggan scored his second goal of the playoffs, this one in overtime, giving the Providence Bruins a 3-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs last night for a 3-0 lead in their first-round playoff series.

The P-Bruins got their other goals from T.J. Trevelyan and Wacey Rabbit.

The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at 17:07 of the first period. Hoggan sent the puck around the boards to Matt Hendricks in the right corner. Hendricks passed to the front of the net, where Trevelyan backhanded it into the cage for his first goal of the postseason.

After a scoreless second period, the P-Bruins made it 2-0 at 9:21 of the third. Trevelyan worked the puck to Hoggan, who put a shot on net. Monarchs goalie Jonathan Bernier made the save, but the rebound went to Rabbit, who scored his second goal of the playoffs.

At 5:34 of overtime, the P-Bruins were shorthanded and Hoggan had the puck in the neutral zone. He carried it down left wing and behind the net. He then tossed the puck toward the net and it went off a Monarch player’s skate and into the goal.

Tuukka Rask stopped 33 of 35 shots for the P-Bruins while Bernier made 31 saves for the Monarchs. The P-Bruins went 0-for-7 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.
