PROVIDENCE — The Providence Bruins season is over.
After sweeping the Manchester Monarchs in the first round of the AHL playoffs, then winning the first two games of the best-of-seven Atlantic Division final series to Portland, the P-Bruins suffered their fourth straight loss to the Pirates, 5-4, last night and were eliminated from the postseason.
The P-Bruins began the scoring at the 2:27 mark of the opening period. Pascal Pelletier stole the puck at his own blue line and carried it down the left boards into the corner. When he sent the puck toward the slot, it hit the post and went into the net for his sixth goal of the postseason.
Providence made it 2-0 while short-handed, at the 9:50 mark. Nate Thompson capitalized on a Pirates’ turnover and skated into the Pirates’ zone on a breakaway. He waited for Pirates goalie Jean-Sebastien Aubin to make his move and then backhanded the puck into the net for his second goal of the playoffs.
Portland cut the lead in half at the 10:35 mark, when Drew Miller tallied his first goal of the playoffs.
In the second period, the Pirates tied the game at 2 at the 12:43 mark when Andy Schneider netted his second goal of the postseason.
Providence regained the lead at the 13:55 mark. From the left point Pelletier sent the puck around the boards to Vladimir Sobotka behind the net. He found Martins Karsums in the slot, who scored his seventh goal of the playoffs.
The Pirates battled back to tie the game at 3 at the 16:47 mark, while on the power play. Jason King scored his fourth goal of the playoffs.
In the third period, the Pirates took their first lead of the game at the 1:13 mark when George Platt tallied his fifth goal of the playoffs. Portland then made it a two-goal advantage at the 6:52 mark. King netted his second goal of the game and fifth of the playoffs.
Providence battled back and cut the lead to one with a power-play goal at the 13:43 mark. T.J. Trevelyan scored from the right face-off circle, his fifth goal of the playoffs, with Jonathan Sigalet and Zach Hamill getting the assists.
Tuukka Rask struggled in net for Providence, stopping only 16 of 21 shots before being replaced by Jordan Sigalet. Sigalet stopped the only shot he faced. Aubin made 30 saves for the Pirates.
The P-Bruins went 1-for-6 on the power play and 2-for-4 on the penalty kill. Pirates 5 P-Bruins 4
