P-Bruins gear up for the next step

PROVIDENCE — After posting a league-best 55-18-3-4 regular-season record, the Providence Bruins kept the momentum going in the semifinals of the Atlantic Division playoffs by sweeping Manchester in four games.
And the P-Bruins don’t want their outstanding season to end until they are holding the Calder Cup.
“It’s just been an outstanding year,” said Providence coach Scott Gordon, the AHL Coach of the Year. “The players are the ones that have allowed us to have the success that we’ve had because of their willingness to be prepared and get themselves ready to play every game.
“Pretty consistently, every guy has brought their ‘A’ game, and as a result we’ve had a level of consistency that, as a team, I’ve never seen.”
Providence will play the winner of the Portland (48-27-5-4)-Hartford (51-23-2-8) series in the best-of-seven Atlantic Division finals. The dates and times haven’t been announced. “I think Portland is probably one of the best offensive teams,” Gordon said.
“Their forwards are as good as anybody’s in our league, from what I saw this year, especially now that they have Bobby Ryan and Drew Miller back from injury… Hartford is a good forechecking team and they have an element of physical play that when you play against them, you expect it.”
Even so, no team has played better than the P-Bruins this season.
“The biggest thing with our success is our consistency, our work ethic and our attitude,” Gordon said. “All three of those things have been there since Day One and have continued to get better as the season has gone on. Nobody in that locker room wants to let the other guy down.”
The P-Bruins, who have a balanced attack, scored 280 goals during the regular season, which ranked them second in the AHL (3.5 goals per game). On defense, they allowed 2.58 goals per game, the second-best mark in the Atlantic Division.
The P-Bruins could get help from the Boston Bruins, who were eliminated from the playoffs by Montreal Monday night. The potential reinforcements are forwards Vladimir Sobotka, Petteiri Nokelainen, David Krejci and Phil Kessel.
As of yesterday, however, Gordon did not know if those players would be joining the P-Bruins.
“We don’t know for sure,” Gordon said. “They have four players on our playoff roster. Whether they all come down, I don’t know. That hasn’t been decided.”

Left winger Pascal Pelletier led Providence’s offense in the regular season by scoring 37 goals, fourth-best in the league. He also notched three goals and an assist in the semifinal series against Manchester.
Jeff Hoggan is leading the P-Bruins in points in the playoffs with three goals and three assists.
“We’ve got production from a lot of people,” Gordon said.
