Sharks 3, P-Bruins 2: Callahan’s first goal is the winner

PROVIDENCE — Joe Callahan scored his first goal of the season, at the 18:02 mark of the third period, giving the Worcester Sharks a 3-2 victory over the Providence Bruins Saturday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

The P-Bruins took the lead at the 6:27 mark of the opening period while on the power play. Mikko Lehtonen passed the puck to Matt Marquardt, who found Jamie Arniel heading toward the net. Ariel’s quick shot went in for his fifth goal of the season.

Worcester tied it at the 10:05 mark. Brandon Mashinter tallied his fifth goal of the season, while Danny Groulx and Steven Zalewski recorded the assists.

The P-Bruins regained the lead at the 13-second mark of the second period. Adam McQuaid sent the puck from his defensive end to Zach Hamill in the neutral zone. Hamill carried it behind the Sharks’ net and found Kirk MacDonald open in the slot. It was MacDonald’s fourth goal of the season.

In the third period, the Sharks tied the game at 2-2 at the 11:35 mark. Dwight Helminen netted his third goal of the season, with Will Colbert picking up an assist.

The Sharks took their first lead of the game when Callahan capitalized on a power play. Mashinter got an assist.

Dany Sabourin stopped 28 of 31 shots for the P-Bruins while Alex Stalock made 31 saves for the Sharks.

The P-Bruins were 1-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
