THE HIGHLIGHTS: The PawSox were out-hit, 11-6, by the IronPigs, who also had the game’s only home run when Oscar Robles produced a shot down the right-field line for a two-run homer and a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning. The PawSox managed to pull out the win by getting two-out hits with men in scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings. Chris Carter tied the score in the eighth and Jeff Bailey won it on a broken-bat infield hit in the ninth. Lincoln Holdzkom (5-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win, and Jon Switzer pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save. The PawSox went 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position while the IronPigs were 1-for-7. The win allows the PawSox (42-30) to match their season-high of 12 games over .500.

BREAKING THE MOLD: Bailey continues to excel as a leadoff hitter, a spot the 29-year-old former catcher had never been asked to fill. Bailey is third in the International League in homers and RBI. “Jeff’s not the typical leadoff guy,” PawSox manager Ron Johnson said. “We don’t have a prototypical guy. Joe Thurston is the closest we have, but he’s comfortable in the two-hole.” Bailey won the game with a play typical of a leadoff man when he hit a groundball that shortstop Mike Rouse fielded beyond second base. Bailey beat the throw, allowing pinch runner Chad Spann to score the winning run.

KEY TO THE GAME: Bailey came through earlier. He had a hand in all three runs while going 3-for-4 with a walk. Bailey opened the scoring with two out in the fifth, when he hit a 51-mph eephus pitch by R.J. Swindle to right field to drive in Dusty Brown. “He fooled me, but I kept my hands back and got just enough of it to get it over the infield.” Bailey also singled to right-center field and scored on Carter’s single in the eighth.

PROSPECT WATCH: Brown, a 25-year-old catcher, continued his strong recent play. After hitting home runs in the previous two games, he was 1-for-3 and threw out one of two base stealers. Brown is 21-for-65 (.323) in his last 18 games.
