Colon shines in opener as PawSox sweep twin bill in Buffalo

•HIGHLIGHTS: The PawSox got all the scoring they would need in the first inning of the first game when they plated two runs on one hit and two walks. George Kottaras’ RBI single scored Jeff Bailey and Jed Lowrie scored on a Sandy Madera sacrifice. Chris Smith worked a perfect seventh inning to pick up his fourth save of the season in the 2-0 win. In the nightcap, the PawSox (25-17) made good use of a four-hit, three-run second inning as they built a 4-0 lead through two innings en route to a 9-1 win and the sweep. Joe Thurston went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Chad Spann’s three-run home run in the seventh capped the PawSox’ 14-hit outburst. David Pauley (4-2) got the win. Danny Sandoval went 3-for-4 for Buffalo (18-23).
•KEYS TO THE SWEEP: It wasn’t hard to find a key as Bartolo Colon stole the show by tossing a brilliant one-hitter in the first game of the doubleheader. Working quick with excellent command to both sides of the plate, Colon pitched six strong innings, throwing 64 pitches, 45 for strikes, as he fanned four batters, issued no walks and topped out at 95 mph. “We were all real pleased, as I’m sure everybody upstairs will be when we get these reports in,” PawSox manager Ron Johnson said of Colon’s outing. Michael Aubrey spoiled Colon’s no-hit bid when he cracked a single to right field in the fourth inning. Colon is the only man in the 21-year history of Dunn Tire Park to throw a no-hitter, accomplishing that feat June 20, 1997, when the Bisons, then part of the American Association, blanked New Orleans, 4-0.
•THEY LOVE BUFFALO: Don’t be shocked if Keith Ginter and Jeff Bailey both circle the Bisons on the schedule. Both have been having a great success against the Herd this season as Bailey is a combined 11-for-27 with two home runs in this series, while Ginter, a former Bison, has 10 hits in 24 at-bats against his former mates.
•DOUBLE THE FUN: This marks the second time in less than a week the PawSox took both ends of a doubleheader as they swept Norfolk on May 10.
•THEY SAID IT: Bartolo Colon on whether he thinks Boston will call him up in the near future: “That’s their decision. The plans are [that I] still have two starts to go here. But if it’s before then or after the two starts, that’s fine. Whatever they say. It’s [Boston’s] decision.”
