PawSox, Bisons Rained Out By Mike Haim

01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, May 15, 2008

•THE HIGHLIGHTS: The PawSox chalked up their fourth postponement of the season, as persistent rains came through the Buffalo area late yesterday afternoon and prevented the game against the Bisons from starting. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader today, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 o’clock.

•TRANSACTION: Outfielder Jonathan Van Every had an eventful day, after being notified late Tuesday night that he was called up to Boston to replace injured Clay Buchholz. Van Every, who originally thought PawSox manager Ron Johnson was playing a prank, caught a morning flight to Baltimore and started in center field for the matinee. He was 1-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts in his major league debut.

•THEY SAID IT: “It may have been a blessing in disguise,” said Johnson of the rainout. “This off-day is much needed for our bullpen, so it worked out really well.” The PawSox used three relievers in each of the last two games. “In this situation, the concern would have been starts and stops,” Johnson said. “We couldn’t defend that and we couldn’t send the same (pitcher) out there.”

•UP NEXT: The weather should cooperate for the twinbill, with a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures in the low 60s. Bartolo Colon (1-0, 1.13) will make a rehab start in the first game. Back in 1997, he pitched the only no-hitter in Dunn Tire Park as a member of the Bisons. David Pauley (3-2, 3.56) will go in the nightcap. Buffalo will counter with Adam Miller (0-0, 2.04) and Jason Stanford (1-1, 1.66).
