THE HIGHLIGHTS: After managing only four hits in six innings against Rochester starter Kevin Mulvey, the Pawtucket Red Sox rocked Mulvey and relief pitchers Ricky Barrett and Tim Lahey for four consecutive hits and three runs in the seventh inning to the delight of the crowd of 11,157. Jeff Corsaletti started the rally with a one-out double to right that sent Mulvey to the dugout. Gil Velazquez followed with an RBI single to center off Barrett and took second on the throw home. Jonathan Van Every ripped a ground ball inside the first-base bag that rolled to the right-field corner for an RBI triple. Exit Barrett and enter Lahey. Jeff Bailey greeted him with an RBI single to left.

KEY TO THE GAME: Gil Velazquez’s fielding and hitting and Charlie Zink’s pitching. Velazquez robbed catcher Ryan Jorgensen of a hit in the third inning when he went into the hole and made a backhanded stop, slipped on the outfield grass, got up and fired a head-high throw that beat Jorgensen by a step. He was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double to right-center in the second inning, a solo home run to left, his sixth, in the fifth, and his RBI single in the seventh. Zink didn’t have his best stuff early in the game, but he had enough to last seven innings and win his 13th game, the most in the International League. He allowed nine hits in seven innings but only three after a five-hit, three-run third. He walked one batter, struck out two and threw 70 strikes among his 95 pitches. John Switzer retired the side in the eighth and Chris Smith did the same in the ninth.

HE SAID IT: Manager Ron Johnson on Velazquez: “Tremendous night tonight with a single, double, homer … He’s a phenomenal defender, and he’s come up with countless timely hits. He’s really swinging the bat well right now. He was right in the mix all night long.”

On Zink: “I think starters are a little better when they have to battle a little adversity and you kind of see what your guy’s made of. The thing is with Charlie, in throwing the knuckleball, we all know he has to stay patient with it, and it’s all about a feel, and if he gets the feel, he’s going to roll deep in the game. He got it tonight. He minimized the damage and ends up picking up the win. That shows a lot of maturity. He’s professionalizing himself.”

On Corsaletti’s double in the seventh: “That was the big hit. He’s going to be a valuable commodity here. You can see the ability. I really think this young man is going to do some really fun stuff for us down the stretch.”

LOOKING AHEAD: Playoff tickets are on sale at the McCoy Stadium box office or by calling the PawSox at (401) 724-7300. Governor’s Cup semifinal and final tickets are $10 for box seats and $6 for adults and $4 for kids for general admission. Playoffs begin Sept. 3. The Governor’s Cup champ will play the Pacific Coast League champion Sept. 16 in Oklahoma City for the Triple A championship.

NEXT UP: PawSox righthander David Pauley (12-3) will go against Anthony Swarzak, who will make his Triple A debut today after being summoned from New Britain. First pitch is 12:05 p.m.
