Pawtucket Red Sox
PawSox 8, Mud Hens 5 -- Moss hits two of PawSox' four homers
08:03 AM EDT on Monday, July 28, 2008
THE HIGHLIGHTS: There were plenty of home runs at Fifth Third Field last night, and Pawtucket out-homered Toledo, 4-2, to win for the second time in three games against the Mud Hens. Brandon Moss had a solo homer in the first and a two-run homer in the third — on a ball that traveled more than 400 feet to straightaway center — that jump-started a five-run third-inning outburst by the PawSox. George Kottaras added his 19th homer of the season in the second and Chris Carter went back-to-back with Moss by hitting his 23rd home run in the third. Pawtucket finished with 15 hits, and each starter except Sean Danielson had at least one. That was more than enough offense for PawSox starter Edgar Martinez, who gave up just two hits and two runs in six solid innings to go 4-1 as a starter this season.
KEY TO THE GAME: Moss was 0-for-7 with the PawSox after his demotion from Boston on Friday, but he broke out of that mini-slump with a flourish. He homered in his first two at-bats, then slammed a hot liner to second in his final at-bat of the night. But that last ball went right to Toledo second baseman Michael Hollimon, who caught it and threw to first to double off Jeff Bailey.
THEY SAID IT: “I put in [Saturday’s] game report that Brandon Moss is close to coming around,” Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson said. “And I know what Brandon Moss can do — he can hit. He’s a professional hitter, and he’s a big-leaguer. Those two home runs were hit hard.”
