Pawtucket Red Sox
Red Wings 4, PawSox 3 By Jim Mandelaro
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, August 24, 2008
•THE HIGHLIGHTS: Jason Lane greeted right-hander Brian Bass, just down from the Minnesota Twins, with a two-run homer to left in the first inning. Lane signed with on Aug. 19 after being granted his release from the New York Yankees the day before.
Right-hander Michael Bowden pitched a great game but was denied his first Triple-A win when reliever Kyle Snider served up a two-run homer to Matt Macri in the seventh inning, pushing Rochester in front, 4-3. Bowden allowed three runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked none and struck out six but remains 0-3.
•ON TO POSTSEASON: Despite the loss, the PawSox clinched their first playoff berth since 2003 because Toledo also lost. Pawtucket will meet Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a best-of-five series beginning Sept. 3. Tickets for all possible games at McCoy Stadium are on sale at the stadium box office.
•KEY TO THE GAME: The Red Wings were on a 14-1 run at Frontier Field, but Bowden never let their dangerous offense get untracked. Lane’s homer gave Bowden early breathing room.
•PROSPECT WATCH: Bowden is the No. 7 prospect in the Boston chain, according to Baseball America magazine. He was promoted from Double-A Portland after going 9-4 with a 2.33 ERA. Bowden allowed just one earned run in his last start, a six-inning gem against Buffalo, but fell to 0-3 with the PawSox as Buffalo won, 1-0.
•NEXT GAME: The PawSox continue their road trip tonight in Allentown, Pa., taking on the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at 5:35 p.m. It’s the start of a four-game series. Knuckleballer Charlie Zink (13-5, 2.88 ERA) will pitch for Pawtucket against fellow right-hander Carlos Carrasco (1-2, 2.66).
•THEY SAID IT: “It’s part of the game,” Bowden said of not getting the win. “Next time I might give up six runs and win.”
Despite the loss, the Pawtucket clubhouse was one big beer-and-champagne shower as the team celebrated clinching a postseason berth.
“It’s exciting to make the playoffs,” Bowden said. “It’s been a few years since this club has done it. It’s awesome.”
