Pawtucket Red Sox
PawSox 8, Chiefs 5 -- Struggling Corsaletti breaks out with 5 RBI
07:36 AM EDT on Thursday, August 21, 2008
•HIGHLIGHTS: Jeff Corsaletti, batting a mere .193 with one homer and five RBI in his first 32 games and 109 at-bats for the PawSox, had a homer and four RBI last night. Corsaletti lofted a sacrifice fly in the first for the first run of the game and capped a five-run fifth-inning uprising by clubbing a three-run homer to right-center, giving the PawSox a 6-2 lead. … David Pauley retired the first 12 batters he faced in his 6 1/3-inning, seven-hit, four-run performance that netted him his league-leading 14th win, against only four losses. …. Joe Thurston and Sandy Madera each reached base four times on a pair of singles and two walks. … Dusty Brown went 3-for-4 with a walk. … Kyle Snyder allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings in his third game since returning from the disabled list. … Hunter Jones notched the final out, a whiff of Wayne Lydon, earning his seventh save.
•KEYS TO THE GAME: The PawSox took advantage of the wildness of the Chiefs’ Chris George (two walks, run-producing wild pitch) and clutch hits by Madera (RBI single) and Corsaletti for the decisive five-run fifth. A walk and a run-producing hit- batsman factored into a two-run sixth that made it an 8-2 game.
•NOTES: The PawSox’ magic number is down to three for making the playoffs. … Second-place Pawtucket moved to within 1½ games of first-place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. … Madera, who missed the previous game because of a bruised ankle, started last night at first base. … Former major-leaguer Bob Tewksbury, a sports psychology coach for the Sox’ minor-league system, threw a round of batting practice. … Ralph Treuel, the minors’ pitching coordinator, also has been at McCoy Stadium for this homestand. … Thurston swiped two bases, giving him 19 for the season and moving him past Sean Danielson for the team lead. He escaped a rundown in the sixth after being picked off by flopping onto the dirt and eluding a tag. That led to the ejection of Syracuse second baseman Danny Sandoval and catcher Robinson Diaz who argued that Diaz had tagged out Thurston. … Syracuse manager Doug Davis, coaching at third base, was tossed by plate umpire R.J. Thompson in the seventh for complaining about a strike call on designated hitter Russ Adams.
•ON DECK: Bartolo Colon (2-1, 1.93) will make another rehab start, facing Syracuse’s Ricky Romero (1-2, 3.52) in the finale of the three-game series, which is the finale of the homestand. Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, on hand as part of a Prostate Health Awareness Campaign, will sign autographs.
