Pawtucket Red Sox
PawSox 6, Mud Hens 1
01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, July 19, 2008
KEYS TO THE GAME: Toledo center fielder Clete Thomas misjudged Jeff Corsaletti’s bases-loaded, none-out bullet right at him, the ball sailing over his head for extra bases. Two runs scored, but Thomas recovered quickly enough to hit cutoff man Erick Almonte, whose relay to catcher Max St. Pierre nailed Dusty Brown trying to score from first. … The wildness of Toledo starter Anastacio Martinez, manifested in four walks and a hit-batsman in the third through fifth innings, helped Pawtucket score six runs.
HIGHLIGHTS: PawSox starter Devern Hansack continued his string of excellent outings, limiting Toledo to one run on two hits over seven innings, his effort spoiled only by Michael Hollimon’s homer in the fifth. Over his last six starts totaling 39 innings, Hansack is 3-1 with a 1.62 earned-run average, having allowed only 21 hits and 7 walks with 39 strikeouts over that stretch. … David Ortiz’ second homer in as many nights, a three-run shot in the fifth, opened up a 6-1 advantage. … Pawtucket second baseman Joe Thurston made a nice sliding play to his left to rob Freddy Guzman of a single in the third inning. … PawSox third baseman Keith Ginter made an outstanding running catch of a foul pop near the stands in the fourth. … Corsaletti’s double produced his first two Triple-A RBI in his second game since being promoted from Portland on Thursday.
NOTES: Yesterday was Photo Day for the PawSox, who assembled in left-center field for the annual team picture, taken before batting practice. … Today (2-3:15), the PawSox will host the third free youth clinic at McCoy. It’s open to youngsters of all ages. Manager Ron Johnson, pitching coach Rich Sauveur, hitting coach Russ Mormon and several players will be on the field offering tips and instruction. … Michael Bowden, the next in the Sox line of phenom pitchers, is with the PawSox. The 23-year-old spent the first half of the season in Double A Portland, going 9-4 with a 2.33 earned-run average before being placed on the disabled list (strained calf) over a week ago. Bowden, a 6-foot-3, 215-pounder, is expected to be officially promoted to Pawtucket on Monday and activated for a start that night in Columbus.
ON DECK: Pawtucket’s Charlie Zink (11-2, 2.22) will oppose Toledo left-hander Clay Rapada (0-1, 2.60) as the series continues tonight at 6:05.
