PawSox 5, Knights 2

01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, August 10, 2008

•HIGHLIGHTS: Doubles by Jeff Corsaletti, Gil Velazquez and Jeff Bailey produced three runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Bailey’s two-out, two-run two-bagger that gave the PawSox a 5-1 lead. … Joe Thurston singled and homered. He scored Pawtucket’s first two runs. … Right fielder Sean Danielson showed off his blazing speed, scoring easily from first on Bailey’s double into the left-field corner. … Keith Ginter had a pair of hits. … Hunter Jones and Chris Smith (14th save) each worked a spotless inning in relief.

•KEYS TO THE GAME: A sparkling, efficient seven-inning outing by David Pauley. The right-hander allowed only four hits and two runs in his 91-pitch effort. The win boosted his record to 13-4, tying teammate Charlie Zink for the league lead in wins. Pauley held the Knights hitless — 0-for-14 — with runners on base.

•THEY SAID IT: “I wanted to have a good game here and show I can pitch in this atmosphere. My confidence is up. I know I can pitch at this level,” said Pauley, who has had a few brief stints in Boston.

“Coming here you’re out of your normal routine, but it was gratifying to watch (Pauley) to the point where his professionalism gives you a comfort level as a manager,” Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson said.

•NOTES: Jonathan Van Every (oblique) and Chris Carter (oblique) were again unavailable, but Johnson doesn’t think either one will land on the disabled list. … The Knights have swiped eight bases without being caught against the PawSox the last two games. … Charlotte starter Charlie Haeger is primarily a knuckleball pitcher, but has a much better fastball than Boston knuckler Tim Wakefield and uses it more often. Haeger’s fastball topped out at 87 mph yesterday. His slowest knuckler was 67 mph, creating quite a contrast for the PawSox hitters, but Pawtucket got to him for nine hits in seven innings. … Attendance for the Futures at Fenway doubleheader was 36,234, though it was hardly a sellout by the time Pawtucket took the field after Lowell’s 12-inning win in the opener.

•ON DECK: The PawSox and the Knights return to McCoy Stadium today (1:05). Bartolo Colon will make his second rehab start for the PawSox. He’ll be opposed by Lance Broadway (10-7, 4.68). Today is Ladies T-Shirt Day with the first 3,000 female fans receiving a PawSox T-shirt in a promotion sponsored by CVS and ABC-6.
