PawSox 8, Braves 5 - Sixth-inning rally makes a winner of Pauley

08:29 AM EDT on Monday, July 7, 2008

•THE HIGHLIGHTS: In the battle of big innings, the PawSox produced the grandest single-inning display. After Richmond sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth. The PawSox responded with five runs in the top of the sixth. The PawSox put just two balls on the outfield grass in the inning but received the aid of four walks, including three with the bases loaded.

•KEY TO THE GAME: With the exception of the fifth inning, PawSox starter David Pauley silenced the Richmond bats. Before allowing four runs (two earned) in the Braves’ big inning, Pauley had faced just two batters more than minimum. The 2001 eighth-round pick improved to 11-2 on the season.

•PROSPECT WATCH: Jed Lowrie. The 24-year-old shortstop finished with a modest 1-for-3 line, but the Red Sox’ fifth-ranked prospect did a lot of the “little things”. After smoking a double to lead off the fifth inning, Lowrie advanced to third base on a fly ball to put himself 90 feet away from home with one out. What made the play remarkable was that the fly ball was to left field.

•THEY SAID IT: “That guy was all over the place,” said PawSox first baseman Jeff Bailey of Richmond reliever Andrew Shibilo. “Sometimes when a guy’s doing that you’ve got to make him throw a strike first. He wasn’t getting ahead in the count so everybody was just on auto-take.”

NOTES: Someone forgot to inform Red Sox fans that the game was an early July International League game. Making up nearly half of the 2,847 fans in attendance, Red Sox fans were met with choruses of boos and chants of “Tam-pa-Bay” after starting several pro-Red Sox cheers… In the deep canyon that is The Diamond, PawSox catcher Dusty Brown used a little extra strength to record his seventh home run. Brown launched a one-out blast to left-center field in the second inning.

UP NEXT: The PawSox’ Edgar Martinez (3-1, 4.26) will square off with Francisley Bueno (2-3, 4.60) in the second game of a four-game set with the Richmond Braves.
