Pawtucket Red Sox
PawSox 10, Red Wings 0: Van Every hits three home runs as PawSox roll
07:50 AM EDT on Monday, June 30, 2008
•THE HIGHLIGHTS: The PawSox drilled six home runs — three by No. 9 hitter Jonathan Van Every — and blew out the Red Wings in a game yesterday called with two outs in the bottom of the eighth after a 39-minute rain delay. Pawtucket managed only eight hits in the game, but six went over the fences. Jed Lowrie added two homers and former Red Wing Gil Velazquez had one.
•KEY TO THE GAME: Power, power, power and pitching. The six home runs made life easier for Hansack, but the right-hander kept the Red Wings in check throughout. He allowed only two hits in seven innings and struck out the side in his final inning. He threw 93 pitches — 66 for strikes.
Pawtucket’s three homers in the seventh inning blew the game open.
•PROSPECT WATCH: Lowrie extended his hitting streak to nine games and raised his batting average to .287. He’s hitting 13-for-37 (.351) during the streak.
Lowrie, ranked the No. 5 prospect in the Red Sox chain by Baseball America, hit .310 with 1 home run and 7 RBI for Boston in 17 games earlier this season.
•THEY SAID IT: “I’ve hit in the No. 9 slot all year and feel comfortable,” Van Every said. “Today was incredible. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I’m dumbfounded. It hasn’t really set in yet.”
Van Every said the first people he would call would be his parents, who were vacationing in Maine.
Actually, it’s twice in a lifetime for the center fielder. He homered three times in a game in 2001 for Itawamba Community College, in Fulton, Miss.
•UP NEXT: The PawSox continue their road trip in Syracuse tonight at 7. Right-hander Clay Buchholz (3-1, 1.87 ERA) starts for Pawtucket. Syracuse’s starter has yet to be announced. The teams will play again tomorrow at Alliance Bank Stadium, and the PawSox return home to host the Chiefs on Wednesday and Thursday. They host Lehigh Valley on the Fourth of July at 6:15 p.m.
