Red Wings 9, PawSox 3: Hansen, bullpen fail to back up strong start

•THE HIGHLIGHTS: Pawtucket starting pitcher Michael Tejera was sharp for five shutout innings before allowing two runs in the sixth. The veteran left-hander from Cuba scattered six hits, struck out five and walked two in 5 1/3 innings. Leadoff man and right fielder Jeff Bailey went 2-for-4, raising his batting average to .292.

•KEY TO THE GAME: The PawSox led, 3-0, through five innings, with Tejera was tossing a two-hitter. But the Red Wings roared back, scoring five runs on eight hits in the sixth and seventh. Tejera was knocked out after allowing four consecutive hits in the fifth, and reliever Eric Hull was rocked for three straight hits and three runs in the seventh. The PawSox had runners at first and second with none out in the eighth but three consecutive batters struck out. They put runners at second and third with two outs, trailing 5-3, but Tim Lahey fanned Chris Carter to end the threat. Carter left five men on base.

•PROSPECT WATCH: Craig Hansen, Boston’s first-round draft pick in 2005 (26th overall selection) had not allowed a run in his first nine appearances for Pawtucket but was charged with three runs in 1 1/3 innings. He left after giving up a two-out RBI single to Jason Pridie in the eighth, and Darnell McDonald greeted Lincoln Holdzcom with a two-run triple that skipped past a diving Bailey in right. Hansen’s earned-run average rose to 1.72. Hansen has made one appearance for Boston this season, taking the loss on April 23 against the Los Angeles Angels. He allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

•THEY SAID IT: “It was two different games,” PawSox manager Ron Johnson said. “Mike did a nice job through the first five. Hull came in and did a nice job to get us out of the sixth. After that, it was a mess. We just fell apart. Of all the games we’ve played this year, this is one we need to forget about and get to tomorrow. They just beat us.”

•NEXT GAME: The PawSox wrap up their three-game series in Rochester with a 12:05 matinee today at Frontier Field. Right-hander Charlie Zink (2-1, 3.09 ERA) starts for Pawtucket against left-hander Francisco Liriano (0-0, 6.75).
