Yankees 6, PawSox 1

01:00 AM EDT on Friday, August 8, 2008

•THE HIGHLIGHTS: Ben Broussard had a double, homer and three RBI to help the Yankees take the four-game series, three games to one. Phil Hughes, Phil Coke, Steven Jackson and Mark Melancon combined on a four-hitter for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Jason Brown’s double was the only extra-base hit for the PawSox, who scored 11 runs in Wednesday’s win, but just three runs total in their three losses in Moosic, Pa. Devern Hansack (5-10) struck out eight in seven innings while taking the loss. One of the five runs against Hansack was unearned.

•KEY TO THE GAME: Hughes, the Yankees’ 22-year-old pitching prospect, is working his way back from an early-season injury. Hughes gave up one run while working the first 4 2/3innings in his first start of the year for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. “It was my first look at Phillip Hughes,” PawSox manager Ron Johnson said. “He lived up to his billing. He had real good stuff.” Hughes left with a 4-1 lead, but Coke got the win by striking out four in 1 1/3 innings.

•INJURY REPORT: The PawSox could be shorthanded in the outfield. Jonathan Van Every sat out last night’s game with an oblique injury and Chris Carter left the game with a similar injury. “You don’t want to take any chances with those type of injuries,” Johnson said. “The next few days we could be in a kind of wait-and-see situation.”

•UP NEXT: The PawSox return home for a four-game series with Charlotte. Games are set for tonight at 7:05, Sunday at 1:05 and Monday at 12:05 at McCoy Stadium. Tomorrow’s game will be played in Boston at Fenway Park at 4:05. Charlie Zink (13-4, 2.85) pitches for the PawSox tonight against Charlie Haeger (9-10, 4.62). Probables for the rest of the series are: Tomorrow, David Pauley (12-4, 3.36) vs. Lance Broadway (10-7, 4.68); Sunday, Bartolo Colon (2-1, 2.45) vs. Clayton Richard (6-0, 2.37), and Monday, Edgar Martinez (6-2, 4.03) vs. Jack Egbert (3-10, 4.89).
