Pawtucket Red Sox
PawSox 5, Chiefs 3 By Lindsay Kramer

•THE HIGHLIGHTS: Pawtucket scratched out a pair of runs with two outs in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie. Dusty Brown and Sean Danielson singled to get the rally started, and Jonathan Van Every looped a soft single to right for the eventual game-winner. Jon Switzer (4-1) got the win while Hunter Jones earned his fifth save.
“It was huge,” Danielson said of the rally. “In that situation, you don’t need a big home run to win the game. We put together three quality at-bats at the end, and fortunately it put it over the top.”
•THE TURNING POINT: Syracuse starter David Purcey cruised into the top of the seventh looking in control and leading, 2-1. But he walked leadoff hitter Keith Ginter, and catcher George Kottaras followed with a first-pitch laser shot to right that went over the fence just inside the foul pole. One out later, Purcey was sent to the showers.
“Once you fall behind on a guy like that, you are at his mercy,” Kottaras said of Purcey. “He can throw secondary pitches to get you out. I tried to get a pitch I could handle. I did the best I could with it.”
•THE DO-OVER: Pawtucket starter David Pauley showed much more typical form in his return to the site of one of his few bad outings this season. On May 3, he gave up nine hits and seven runs in four innings of an 8-5 loss to Syracuse. Last night, he allowed four hits and two runs in seven innings.
“I thought David was outstanding against a very tough-hitting ball club,” said Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson. “We’re looking for people who are dependable and become professional. In games you don’t pitch a shutout, you give up a run here or there, but you deny the opposition a big inning. That’s what David did tonight.”
•THE INJURY REPORT: Reliever Mike Timlin, with Pawtucket on a rehab assignment, returned to Boston on yesterday to get his injured left knee examined. He is expected to rejoin the PawSox for tonight’s game against visiting Syracuse, and the plan is to throw him for another inning against the Chiefs. Pawtucket outfielder Bobby Kielty, who has been with Lowell while coming back from a left oblique strain, is expected to come back to the PawSox today.
