The PawSox left fielder also reached over the fence and robbed Curtis Thigpen of a two-run homer in the eighth. … Center fielder Sean Danielson ran a long way in catching a deep drive to right-center by the Chiefs' Buck Coats in the first inning, hanging onto the ball as he banged into the fence. In the second, Danielson hustled himself a triple on a shot to right-center.

KEYS TO THE GAME: Bartolo Colon held the Chiefs hitless in his four innings (40 pitches) in his fourth rehab start in the win that shaved the PawSox' magic number to one to make the playoffs. Jose Vaquedano (3-1) and Jon Switzer kept the shutout going but Eric Hull was nicked for three runs in the ninth. The PawSox racked up 15 hits. Every member of the starting lineup had at least one hit.

NOTES: The PawSox lost closer Chris Smith, who was promoted to Boston, so they played last night's game one man short, with a 23-man roster. … Pawtucket will be adding at least one player tonight in Rochester when veteran big-league catcher David Ross, 31, released a few days ago by Cincinnati, joins the team. Ross was signed by the Red Sox yesterday. He is expected to split his time in Pawtucket as a catcher/designated hitter, but he's likely to be promoted to Boston on Sept. 1, when the rosters expand, giving the Red Sox an extra catcher that would allow them the option of pinch hitting for either Jason Varitek or Kevin Cash in the late innings. … Jonathan Van Every (stiff neck) remains out. … Olympic swimmer Elizabeth Beisel, 16, of North Kingstown threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
