Pawtucket Red Sox
PawSox lose in Buffalo; Lowell ready to return to Boston
07:24 AM EDT on Monday, April 28, 2008
THE HIGHLIGHTS: Josh Barfield (2-for-4) sent a Kyle Snyder high curve ball over the left-field wall to give Buffalo a 2-1 lead in the third inning. All four of Barfield's home runs this season have come against the PawSox.
Sandy Madera went 3-for-4 with a run in his first game with Pawtucket. Signed by Boston on April 8, Madera was promoted from Double-A Portland on Saturday to fill the roster spot that opened up when Brandon Moss was called up to Boston due to Sean Casey's going on the DL.
Keith Ginter, who played for Buffalo last season, was the only other PawSox with multiple hits. Chris Carter (1-for-5) and Jonathan Van Every (three walks) both scored for Pawtucket.
Buffalo's Aaron Herr extended his hitting streak to eight games with an RBI single in the sixth that scored Barfield.
KEYS TO THE GAME: The PawSox' first four batters reached base in the second inning, but they could score only one run. Pawtucket also loaded the bases in the fifth and sixth, but could plate only one run in each of those two innings as well. In all, the PawSox stranded 10 runners on the day.
"We had our chances the past two nights. I don't know if it was so much a situation where they beat us, but we didn't go out and take the games," said Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson.
"We had chances. We had chances to open that game up numerous times and you know what, we didn't do it."
Joe Thurston's pop out in the sixth scored Sandy Madera to tie the score at 3-3. Buffalo's Yamid Haad put the Bisons up 4-3 in the seventh when he drove the ball to right field and it bounced off of the glove of outfielder Bryan Pritz, allowing Ryan Mulhern (2-for-4, two runs) to score.
PROSPECT WATCH: After serving as the DH on Saturday night, George Kottaras was once again behind the plate. Kottaras went 0-for-4 with a walk and a strike out.
THEY SAID IT: Completing his rehab stint with Pawtucket, Mike Lowell, who went 3-for-13 with three RBI in his three games with Pawtucket, expects to be in the Boston starting lineup tomorrow, when the Red Sox host Toronto.
"I feel like I passed the test that they wanted me to pass, so I'm looking forward to getting back," Lowell said.
Lowell (1-for-4) got single in the second inning, when he drove a Brian Slocum breaking ball to left field.
