Pawtucket Red Sox
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, July 15, 2004
"Ted (Williams) was to baseball what (Ben) Hogan was to golf. He understood the science of hitting and was a perfectionist in everything he did." -- Williams' former Red Sox teammate Bobby Doerr.
"If you're in this business long enough, you're around more dead mikes than an Irish undertaker." -- Sean McDonough at yesterday's All-Star luncheon when it appeared that Bobby Doerr's microphone wasn't working.
"I tell players today that the fans are great here (in Boston). I tell them that if you're too thin-skinned, take your lunch pail and go back to California." -- Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky.
"As the years go by, we appreciate what Teddy did hitting .406 and what Joe did with his 56-game hitting streak. I, for one, hope their records never get broken." -- Dominic DiMaggio.
"I wish they had another six hours." -- Buddy Bailey on the Teammates luncheon.
"They deserved better." -- International League president Randy Mobley on the weather.
"That was fun today. Even I couldn't screw it up." -- Sean McDonough.
"The PawSox are not just Pawtucket's team." -- Art Pontarelli, scout for the Colorado Rockies, meaning they belong to all of New England.
"I don't think other clubs are obligated to try and mimic what we've seen here. Now, I'm sure there are some that will try, and there are some that will do a pretty good job with it. But one of things that has made this event what it is, is how each of the 17 we've had is unique in its own way. . . . This one I can not imagine anything that they could have done any better. They have certainly made the International League and Triple-A baseball proud, which we never had the first hesitation they wouldn't. They have come through with shining colors. But other clubs don't need to feel like they've got to reach these heights with what they do, because it can still be a successful event and not have to do everything that the PawSox have done here." -- International League president Randy Mobley.
"A lot of times, the best players today are the biggest jerks. I wish Barry Bonds could spend a couple of days with these guys and learn how an athlete should handle himself." -- Sean McDonough, comparing today's players to Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr and Dom DiMaggio.
