PawSox journal: Condition of field in Scranton may be in question

PAWTUCKET -- There were some weather stories floating around McCoy Friday. The best ones were not about what is happening in Rhode Island, but rather the situation in Pennsylvania.

The Scranton/Wilkes Barre and Pawtucket teams not only met at McCoy Thursday and Friday, they are scheduled to play for next three days at PNC Field in Moosic, Pa. The word is, though, that PNC Field is so wet that it will be extremely difficult to play baseball there on the holiday, if not beyond that.

According to one report, Scranton officials feel the situation is bad enough that they asked Pawtucket if the two teams could stay and play at McCoy Saturday.

``I have no comment on that,’’ Scranton manager Dave Miley responded when asked about the issue. ``We are prepared to go and play.’’

The Scranton Yankees had six postponements in June. The area went one stretch with rain on 18 of 20 days. Pawtucket president Mike Tamburro said he was aware of the weather problems in Scranton, but insisted he had not spoken to anyone with the Yankees about staying at McCoy.

``No one has said a word to me,’’ Tamburro said. ``I’ve heard the rumor but I haven’t heard from the Scranton ball club or the league office today. And I talked to the league president about 2 o’clock.’’

It would be all but impossible for Pawtucket to host a game Saturday.

``Something like this has to be done well in advance,’’ Tamburro said. ``Nobody would have wanted July 4th at home more than us. But on the eve of it, it would be pretty difficult to put it all together. You have family and staff who all have plans for the holiday, including the 275 to 300 people it takes to put a game on. To tell them all they’ve got to work on this short notice is almost impossible.’’

Lowrie back as DH

Jed Lowrie returned to the Pawtucket lineup for the first time in six days. He was the designated hitter and batted second.

He was retired on a pop foul to third in the first, took a called third strike in the third, popped out to second in the fifth and was called out on strikes in the eighth.

The infielder is in Pawtucket on a 20-day rehab assignment after wrist surgery. He was sidelined after five games when he was hit on the knee by a pitch.

Assuming Lowrie feels all right, he likely will return to play the field for the first time in a week in Pawtucket’s next game.

Wild pitches

Mark Wagner had his first Triple-A hit, a single to right in the first. Wagner hit third in the order. Wagner nearly had his first Pawtucket home run in his next at-bat. But his drive to center was hauled in by Colin Curtis near the 400-foot sign. . . Paul McAnulty, who was hit on the shin by a pitch Thursday night, sat out the game. . . Portsmouth’s Ryan Westmoreland went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored as he led Lowell over Staten Island, 6-5, Thursday night.
