Pawtucket Red Sox
PawSox 8, Clippers 6: Van Every's homer wins it in 10th
07:29 AM EDT on Monday, June 23, 2008
•HIGHLIGHTS: Jeff Bailey launched his 21st and 22nd home run of the season, Keith Ginter went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, and George Kottaras hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to power a 13-hit attack by the International League-leading PawSox (47-31), who pulled out an 8-6, 10-inning come-from-behind victory over Columbus (41-34).
Trailing by 6-4 after Larry Broadway crushed a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning, Pawtucket answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame — a solo home run by Bailey and an RBI double by Ginter — before Jonathan Van Every brought the crowd of 9,346 to its feet when he hit a game-winning two-run homer over the fence in right field.
Pawtucket designated hitter George Kottaras snapped a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer over the right-field fence that gave Pawtucket a 4-2 lead. Alex Escobar had tied the game at 2-2 for Columbus in the top of the sixth when he belted a two-run homer. Bailey led off the game by slugging his 21st home run of the season, on the second pitch of the contest, to give Pawtucket a 1-0 lead. Jed Lowrie hit an RBI single down the third-base line that scored Van Every in the bottom of the fifth, giving Pawtucket a 2-0 lead.
•NOTES: Bailey (3-for-4, 2 HR, 2 runs scored) has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, going 12-for-32 (.375) with two doubles, four home runs and six RBI. Right fielder Bryan Pritz has a six-game hitting streak, going 10-for-21 (.476) with three doubles and two RBI. Ginter, who went 2-for-3 yesterday with two doubles, 2 RBI, a run scored and was hit by a pitch twice, has hit safely in 9 of his last 11 games, and Kottaras has at least one hit in 7 of his last 9 games. Pawtucket is 5-0 in extra-inning games.
•QUOTES: “There is no quit in these guys,” Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson said after Pawtucket overcame a two-run deficit in the seventh. “After the [top of the] seventh, the guys were saying, ‘OK, we’re down, 2-0, let’s see what we can do here.’ I just think it was phenomenal. We put ourselves in a chance to win in the ninth, and then with JV (Jonathan Van Every) on deck, Bryan Pritz comes up with the big hit (in the 10th) . . . [Columbus pitcher Mike Bacsik) left the breaking ball up there and [Van Every] hit it out.”
•TODAY’S MATCHUP: Charlie Zink (8-2, 2.14 ERA) will pitch for Pawtucket tonight (7 o’clock) against Richmond right-hander Brian Lawrence.
