FOXBORO — Midway through the list of questions for this week’s “Up Close,” Ryan O’Callaghan says he sounds boring and wants to look more lively in print.
But O’Callaghan, the Patriots’ 6-foot-8 second-year offensive lineman and northern California native, was basically being modest. His father, Tom, was a catcher in the San Francisco Giants’ system, and his family owns a vineyard in Sonoma County, Calif., which sells 20 to 40 tons of grapes to winemakers annually.
The right guard also dotes on his mother, Evelyn, who is visiting her son this weekend with her sister — O’Callaghan rented a limousine Friday night to take the three of them all around Boston since it was his aunt’s first visit to the city, and was inquiring about restaurant possibilities. He also took mild offense to former Cal teammate, known funnyman and Bills rookie running back Marshawn Lynch telling the New England media in a conference call this week that O’Callaghan’s nickname on the Bears was “Big Baby” for his lack of facial hair.
O’Callaghan insists his only alias is “O.C.”
The rest of this week’s Up Close:
My first car: I didn’t have it for long, but it was a 1983 Cutlass Supreme. But right after I got that, my dad gave me his truck. I’ve been through a lot of cars. I think it’s my driving style — aggressive. No wrecks [he reaches forward and knocks on wood] — just wear and tear.
My favorite off-day activity: Is resting. On Tuesdays, I just relax.
The last album I bought or downloaded: Was the new Kenny Chesney. I have a wide variety (of music); in my car, I have Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Foreigner’s greatest hits, and Bob Marley.
If I wasn’t in the NFL: Right now? I’d probably be finishing up my degree (he’s three courses shy), and then I think I’d like to get into real estate development.
One job I’d never want to have: As a kid, I used to go to my uncle’s farm and help him bale the hay and stack it in the loft. It’s awful. You’d get all these bites from the bugs in the hay.
My guilty pleasure: All food. There’s nothing better than a great meal. I’ll pay anything for an amazing meal.
Best childhood memory: We went to Disneyland every year from the time I was five until…forever.
