Up close with . . . Wes Welker

FOXBORO — Some things are all about timing or the best situation at the right time.

When New England acquired Wes Welker before the 2007 season, he was looked at as an undrafted, undersized receiver who may have been best known for a game three years earlier against the Patriots in which he kicked a field goal and an extra point, as well as handled punt and kickoff return duties for the Dolphins.

But the Oklahoma City native, who received a scholarship from Texas Tech only after another player backed out of his commitment to the school (it was the only Division I school to make him an offer), came to the Pats and had an instant rapport with Tom Brady.

Paired with Randy Moss, Welker ran all the underneath routes while Moss stretched the field, and the rest is history. The undersized receiver couldn’t be stopped, and Welker had a New England-record 112 receptions in ’07, following that up with 111 last year.

This season, despite missing two games to injury, Welker has 46 catches. Provided he plays every game the rest of the way, he’s on pace for 129 in just 14 games.

Here’s this week’s Up Close.

Favorite TV show: “The Office.”

Favorite meal: I don’t eat it a lot, but lasagna. My mom does a good one, my grandmother. It’s hard to find a good meat lasagna.

First job: Mowing yards. I must have mowed thousands of yards. (The cost) depended on how big the yard was — a standard suburbs yard was $20, $25.

Last concert I went to: I saw Coldplay at the Comcast Center (in Mansfield, Mass.)

Favorite athletes in another sport: Let’s see — (Rays’ infielder) Evan Longoria, Dwyane Wade and Jeff Green, Oklahoma City (Thunder).

My hero: I don’t really have one.

Place I’d like to visit but haven’t yet: Italy and Australia. Those are definitely places I want to hit up.

My pre-game ritual: I like to be the first one to use the bathroom, if that’s a ritual (laughs).

Prized possession: I don’t really have one. Not anything of material value. My family.

If my life was turned into a movie: Who plays me? I don’t know. I guess Matthew McConaughey or the dude who plays Spider-Man (Tobey McGuire) because I look like him supposedly. The plot would just be me being crazy and stupid.
