Sauerbrun staying with Pats
01:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, April 10, 2007
The Patriots yesterday matched the one-year, $1.4-million-contract offer the Denver Broncos made to punter Todd Sauerbrun.
As a 12-year veteran, Sauerbrun was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent, but he gave the Patriots the right of first refusal when he signed with club late last season.
Denver, where the 34-year-old Sauerbrun had spent the 2005 season, made its offer last week and New England decided to match it.
Sauerbrun, cut by the Broncos after testing positive for the banned substance Ephedra and suspended for the first four games last season, was the Pats’ punter for the final five games of the season, including the playoffs. He averaged 43.7 yards per punt.
