Pats activate Gutierrez
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, September 14, 2008
FOXBORO — The New England Patriots made several roster moves last night in preparation for their game today against the New York Jets.
Quarterback Matt Gutierrez was signed off the practice squad and will be eligible to be activated for today’s game. Additionally, the Patriots released wide receiver C.J. Jones.
Gutierrez, 24, was originally signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Idaho State on May 8, 2007. The 6-foot-4-inch, 230-pound quarterback played in five games for the Patriots as a rookie last season and completed one pass for 15 yards. Gutierrez was inactive as the Patriots’ third quarterback in the remaining 11 games of the 2007 season. He was released by the Patriots on Aug. 30 of this year, and was signed to the Patriots’ practice squad on Sept. 10.
Jones, 27, was listed as a day-of-game inactive in the Patriots’ season opener against Kansas City last week after serving as a member of the Patriots’ practice squad for the entire 2007 season. He has not appeared in an NFL game.
The following Patriots players were downgraded to out for today’s game: wide receiver Sam Aiken, linebacker Eric Alexander and tight end Benjamin Watson.
