Patriots journal: New QB Walter has ‘tons of work’ to do

FOXBORO –– As far as Andrew Walter is concerned, there is no competition for the Patriots’ backup quarterback spot behind Tom Brady.

At least not right now.

Kevin O’Connell has that job because he knows the system a lot better than Walter does. But once Walter learns the system, all bets are off.

“I’m pretty much the one asking questions,” Walter said. “He’s been around here, so he knows the system. For me, whenever I get a chance to go in there, it’s to learn something and get a completion and basically put the team in a position to succeed. That’s my job right now. It’s really not a matter of competing against Kevin or Brian [Hoyer] or anyone else.”

There is no question that Walter wants to win the job as Brady’s backup, but with only a week in New England’s system, he knows he has a long way to go.

“At this point I feel like it’s time to keep learning,” Walter said. “There’s just a lot of learning left to do.”

Walter was drafted in the third round, 69th overall, by the Oakland Raiders in 2005. He spent his rookie season as the Raiders’ third-string quarterback, but he played in 12 of Oakland’s games during his sophomore campaign, starting eight of them.

However, Walter has played in just three regular-season games since the 2006-07 season.

He said that the terminology of the Patriots’ playbook has been a bit demanding.

“It’s a process,” Walter said. “There is no question about it. It’s a process and there’s still tons of work on my end that I need to do like get caught up on a lot of things.”

He hopes to gain more confidence running the offense in New England’s first preseason game Thursday night against Philadelphia.

“I just take any game as it’s important, whether it’s preseason or whatever,” Walter said. “It’s your resume that is out there in front of everybody to see. It’s what you put on tape. The goal is win a football game as a team and then, personally, to play well and to be on top of it mentally. It’s going to be a challenge, obviously, because I don’t know if I’ve even been here a week yet, but I can’t say anything other than [you’re playing] for your resume and you want it to look good.”

Belichick to call offensive plays

Now that former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is coaching the Denver Broncos this season, who will call the offensive plays for the Patriots this year?

Belichick said he will.

“Well, ultimately you can say that I am responsible for the plays. So if things don’t go well, then I’m sure I’ll hear about it from all of you,” Belichick said.

Brady in Details

Brady will be featured in September’s issue of Details, the magazine.

In the article, he opens up about Belichick, about being a father and dealing with the paparazzi.

On Belichick, Brady said: “Sometimes, during practice, you throw a bad ball — that’s the way it goes… [Belichick] says, ‘Brady, you can’t complete a … hitch.’ And I’ll be sitting there thinking, I’m a [expletive] nine-year veteran, I’ve won three … Super Bowls — he can kiss my … That’s what you’re thinking on the inside,” Brady told the magazine. “But on the outside I’m thinking, ‘You know what? I’m glad he’s saying that. I’m glad that’s what he’s expecting,’ you know? Because that’s what I should be expecting.”

Also in the article, he said that the birth of his son Jack he had with former girlfriend Bridget Moynihan completely changed his life, and that dealing with the paparazzi doesn’t bother him.

From no pads to light pads

The Patriots held a walkthrough with no pads in the morning and another walkthrough with shorts-and-shells (light shoulder pads) in the afternoon.

Prayers for Shriver

Brady said he’s praying for the Kennedy and Shriver families, who lost Eunice Kennedy Shriver, former president John F. Kennedy’s sister and founder of the Special Olympics, on Tuesday at the age of 88.

Earlier this year, Brady worked with Shriver’s son Anthony’s Best Buddies charity, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment.

“I saw Mrs. Shriver when I did the Best Buddies event about two months ago and she was always in great spirits,” Brady said. “I think she set a great example for everybody around the world — and certainly her family and Anthony [Shriver], who started Best Buddies — that one of the great pleasures of life is helping other people in their lives. Eunice, she really embodied that with her starting of the Special Olympics and she was a great woman who raised really a great family.”

A break for the offense

Rookie offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer earned his teammates the night off from meetings, catching a punt from Chris Hanson at the close of this evening’s session.

Hanson did Vollmer no favors with the punt, as it drifted a bit to Vollmer’s left and was wobbly. Vollmer juggled the ball for a split-second, but was able to hang on and was mobbed by his teammates; Bill Belichick also shook his hand in congratulations.

In recent years, Vince Wilfork (who last year made the catch with one ball already tucked in his arm) and Matt Light have been the players tabbed to catch the punt. It has become a fun camp tradition.

As if that weren’t exciting enough, Jon Bon Jovi was on the sidelines for much of the session (sarcasm, people, sarcasm). He and Belichick are friends, and he usually makes an appearance to training camp every year. In his honor, Bon Jovi music blared from the speakers as the players stretched and did some drills.

So the actual practice itself was held in shells and shorts (the Pats have still been in pads 15 of 22 camp practices, a crazy-high ratio), and by press tent consensus, there were 11 players not spotted: WR Wes Welker, CB Shawn Springs, LB Tedy Bruschi, DL Mike Wright, LB Paris Lenon, LS Nathan Hodel, OL George Bussey, T Mark LeVoir (PUP) and WR Brandon Tate (NFI).

There was a lot of scout-team work in this session, with the top offense going against the scout team defense and vice-versa. Jamar Love was repeatedly beat by Randy Moss for catches and touchdowns.

Belichick spent a few minutes along the sidelines with Derrick Burgess at one point, and appeared to be explaining a technique to the newest Patriot. Belichick did not appear angry, he was simply discussing the finer points, putting his hands in Burgess’ chest at one point to illustrate his point.

Lottery ticket unveiled

The Patriots teamed up with the Massachusetts State Lottery and introduced a new $5 instant lottery ticket that will raise millions of dollars for Bay State communities while giving fans the potential to win a variety of prizes, including cash and five pairs of season tickets for life.

The New England Patriots instant game ticket is expected to generate more than $151 million in sales and reward players with more than $116 million in prizes. The game will feature 10 instant prizes of $1 million, 4,250 VIP ticket packages, and unique Patriots merchandise.

“We are proud to team up with the Lottery in a partnership that will not only reward our game winners with cash and one-of-a-kind experiences, but will also benefit cities and towns throughout the Commonwealth,” Kraft said. “We are happy to contribute some truly unique prizes to complement the many cash rewards offered. We are excited to see Patriots fans win these prizes throughout our 50th anniversary season.”

Patriot cheerleaders and mascot Pat Patriot will hand out 1,800 instant tickets to the public on Wednesday from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at North and South Station and Faneuil Hall in Boston.
