Curtain Call: Veteran Troy Brown is hoping for one last hurrah
11:23 AM EST on Saturday, December 22, 2007
The Patriots’ all-time leading receiver with 557 career receptions.
FOXBORO — To say that Troy Brown has done a lot for the Patriots organization is an understatement.
•He is the Patriots’ all-time leading receiver with 557 career receptions.
•He is second on the franchise’s receiving yardage list with 6,366 yards.
•He is the Patriots’ all-time leading receiver in the postseason with 58 catches in 20 playoff games and his 694 career receiving yards in the playoffs also rank first in franchise history.
•Brown set a franchise single-season record with 101 receptions in 2001 and he owns the franchise-record for most catches in a game (16 versus Kansas City on Sept. 22, 2002).
•He is the only player in Patriots history to record a reception and an interception in the same game.
•And, he has helped New England win three Super Bowls (2001, 2003, 2004).
So Brown has certainly done a lot for the team. Tomorrow, he hopes the organization will activate him in what could be his last regular-season home game in a Patriots uniform.
Brown, 36, who is in his 15th NFL season, said that he has done everything humanly possible to get back into the Patriots’ lineup after beginning the season on injured reserve. He has spent long hours in the gym to to try to return to his old form.
“I’m doing what I have to do every day,” said Brown, who suffered a knee injury in the AFC Championship Game in January. “One day at a time man, that’s all I can do. I’m controlling what I can control and that’s it. All I can do is go out there and give my best effort and let the rest fall in place.”
He played well enough in practice last week to earn one of the Patriots’ Practice Player of the Week awards but he remained inactive for last week’s game.
“I feel good,” Brown said. “I feel great, actually, because it’s the holidays. I’m happy, so actually I feel great.”
Brown’s hoping to play tomorrow against Miami, but he said he won’t be too disappointed if he remains inactive for another game. The best Christmas present, Brown said, would be a Patriots victory.
“Like I said, the competitor in you wants to be out there on Sundays and that hasn’t been the case so far,” said Brown. “But like I said, with what [my role has been], I’ve been happy.
“I’ve been able to enjoy being around these guys, and I’ve been on a couple of road trips with the guys, so all that stuff has been great — being able to be in the meeting rooms with them and see what they’re doing and how they’re getting ready to play. I’m happy practicing with them every day, so, like I said, it’s been a good experience for me.”
Brown’s input at team meetings and on the practice field has not gone unnoticed.
“He’s a smart guy,” fellow receiver Donte Stallworth said when Brown was activated last month. “That’s one thing that he brings to the table — his intelligence from this being his 99th year in the NFL. Troy’s been in, I think, four or five Super Bowls. He’s been in this game a long time and he knows how to play. Anytime you get a guy like that, you try to soak up some information from him, so that’s definitely something that he brings to the table and into our meeting rooms —intelligence and experience.”
The Patriots are on pace to break all sorts of NFL records, including most touchdowns in a season (70) and most points in a season (556), and though Brown would have liked to been part of that, he said that he has been having a good time watching the Patriots offense put up eye-popping numbers (67 TDs, 523 points).
“It’s been great,” Brown said of watching the offense perform. “The team has done well. It’s been great being able to watch and see these guys having a lot of fun. I’m having a lot of fun watching them.”
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady certainly wants to see Brown back on the field. After Brown was activated last month, Brady said that he was looking forward to throwing to Brown in a game.
“He’s been working very, very hard,” Brady said. “(He’s) played a long time and it’s great to have him up and available. I sure hope he makes a big impact on the team. He always does, just with his leadership, his ability to bring people together and he always has positive words. He’s a great leader. He’s a great teammate and everybody loves having Troy Brown.”
When Brown was activated last month, New England coach Bill Belichick indicated that there would be a good chance that Brown would play this season.
“Troy is a versatile guy for us. He’s done a lot of different things around here,” Belichick said after Brown was activated. “He’s played on offense, defense, special teams and obviously [is a] very experienced player, a guy that has done a lot of different things, and I think has the opportunity to fill different spots for us. We’ll see how that works out on a game-to-game basis, and that’s the way it’s been here for a while. That’s the way it will be this week, that’s the way it will be next week.”
