Randy Moss is coming to New England surrounded by more question marks than The Riddler.
Will he give his all on the field or will he quit on the Patriots the first time he isn’t happy with his receiving yards?
Does he possess a me-first attitude?
Can he adapt to the Patriot Way and adhere to the standards set forth by locker room leaders Tom Brady, Tedy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison and Richard Seymour?
At 30 years old, can he still beat defenders like he did during his eye-popping days with the Vikings?
Basically, can a zebra change his (perceived) stripes?
Thus far, it would appear that he has.
On the day that his team acquired the 6-foot-4 wide receiver, coach Bill Belichick indicated that Moss would probably not be taking part in New England’s offseason training program:
“He has a schedule in the offseason that didn’t include us or anything that we were doing, so there are a couple of things that he already has committments on, so it won’t quite line up,” Belichick said last month.
But last week, word got out that Moss was indeed in Foxboro. He was in the weight room with his new teammates and will take part in the first of two voluntary passing camps this week. He even turned up at a Patriots charity basketball game last Thursday night.
Not only was Moss not expected to be around this soon, as Belichick implied, but he’s under no obligation to do so. Full-team minicamp June 5-7 will be his first mandatory team event since he was acquired, and the reduced-rate contract he signed with New England included no up-front bonuses. Moss doesn’t start collecting on his $2.5-million base salary until the regular season begins.
But in an interview with 890 ESPN in Boston last week, defensive lineman Jarvis Green revealed that Moss was in Gillette Stadium last Wednesday, and it made an impression on his teammates.
“Just (his) being there. He didn’t even have to work out. Just being there says a lot about him,” Green said. “He’s not the guy everybody thinks he is. He just wants to be a Patriot. I know what people say about him, but he wants to win. He’s a competitor.”
During his introductory conference call, Moss bristled at questions about his professionalism and said that he lived his life under a microscope. When it comes to his work ethic or competitive nature, he challenged media members — male and female — to line up against him and see what happens.
Moss also expressed his excitement several times during that call about being on the New England roster, and he is certainly backing up his words.
With 101 career touchdowns, Moss might be playing for more than just wins in New England. The young man who inspired kids to tell friends they “got Mossed” when they were beat to a ball, as Ellis Hobbs said recently, commanded only a fourth-round draft pick when Oakland dealt him here. Moss has struggled with leg injuries in recent seasons, and his attitude and mostly childish incidents — squirting water at an official, mock-mooning the crowd in Green Bay — have worn thin with some around the league.
Moss’ deal is only for one year. If all goes right, if his stripes have changed, it could rejuvenate his career. But if things go well with the Patriots, Moss might just stick around.
He’s certainly making a good first impression.
