Patriots journal: Brady says Belichick ‘cursed out’ team after Indy loss

FOXBORO — While many NFL teams enjoy “Victory Mondays” — when players get the Monday after a win off, Bill Belichick gave his players Monday off this week despite their loss against Indianapolis.

But when they came back on Wednesday (Tuesday is almost always a day off during the regular season), there was only one message: it’s time to get ready for the Jets.

When everyone gathered for a morning meeting to watch film of the Colts game, “he (cursed us out) pretty good on the things we did wrong,” Tom Brady said, this week holding his news conference back in front of his locker, much to the aggravation of stall neighbor Randy Moss. “There’s no ‘welcome back,’ there are no hugs in the locker room or anything like that. We forget the things we didn’t do so well and we get back to work.

“We’ve lost plenty of games here, and you have to show back up the next day and put just as much effort into it as you did the previous week. The reasons why you lost, you have to understand those, and the reasons why you’re doing well; you have to understand those and try to be more consistent in the things that you’re doing well.”

After a result like the Patriots had in Indianapolis — we all remember what happened, no need to rehash it all — getting back to the grind and routine is welcome for the players.

“It’s the best way to get over a loss: come back to work,” Brady said. “Everybody’s really excited to be in here and we’ll try to make some improvements this week and go out and play a lot better.”

If recent history is a guide, the Pats usually bounce back from big losses in a big way, meaning the reeling Jets should be on high alert.

After the last Patriots-Jets meeting in Week 2, Jets’ cornerback Darelle Revis said that his job was to shadow Randy Moss everywhere he went on the Meadowlands’ field, even, he joked, if Moss went to the restroom.

Moss had 4 catches for just 24 yards that day — his lowest single-game output of the season — and Revis has an interception on a deep ball Brady threw for Moss.

But something of a he said-he said has come up about Revis’ coverage that game: the young corner claims he was in single, man-on-man coverage the entire game, while Bill Belichick said on Wednesday that Revis had a lot of over the top help from safety Kerry Rhodes.

“They played over the top of him quite a bit. Not always, but quite a bit,” Belichick said.

During his conference call with Patriots media members, Revis was informed of Belichick’s words. His reply? “I don’t believe that statement.”

Every time Revis is mentioned by a member of the Jets, he’s called the best corner in the NFL, something Oakland’s Nnamdi Asamougha might like to argue. But when Revis pulled in his pick against the Pats in September, Rhodes was right there with him on the sideline — a clear sign that he was offering help.

After the Pats’ loss to the Jets, Moss claimed there are no shutdown corners in the NFL, and that he could be considered a shutdown corner if he had help from Brandon Meriweather all game.

Revis, perhaps rightfully so, took it as a sign of disrespect. On Wednesday, Revis called Moss a great receiver but became agitated when reporters tried to clarify if he had any safety help during their last matchup.

The Patriots had nine players not participate in Wednesday’s practice, which was held in unseasonably pleasant weather on the upper fields behind Gillette Stadium.

But Sammy Morris and Matt Light were on the field, which is a more positive sign for them than their participation in last Friday’s session; Wednesday and Thursday practices are typically more physically intensive than Fridays.

Not practicing were: Sam Aiken (hip), Tully Banta-Cain (groin), Jarvis Green (knee), Gary Guyton (illness), Randy Moss (not injury related), Stephen Neal (head), Rob Ninkovich (knee), Fred Taylor (ankle), and Ty Warren (ankle).

This is at least the fourth time this season that Moss has gotten a Wednesday off, a veteran’s day off for a player who has dealt with back and shoulder issues this season.

Limited on Wednesday were: Eric Alexander (groin), Chris Baker (shoulder), Ron Brace (ankle), Julian Edelman (forearm), Dan Koppen (knee), Light (knee), and Morris (knee).

Tom Brady (right shoulder), Shawn Springs (knee) and Benjamin Watson (back) were listed as having full participation.

New York reported linebacker Vernon Gholston (hamstring) and safety Jim Leonhard (thumb) as not practicing; defensive end Shaun Ellis (knee) and receiver Brad Smith (quadriceps) were limited.

Stat check: The Patriots’ offense is holding steady as the second-ranked in the league statistically; New England is 15th in the NFL in rushing and second in passing yardage. The defense is ranked seventh for the second straight week (17th against the run, seventh against the pass). New Orleans has the top-ranked offense, the Giants the top-ranked defense…New England ranks third in the league in both scoring offense (28.8 points per game) and scoring defense (16.7 PPG).
