New England Patriots
Green, Wright back on the field for Patriots
08:27 AM EDT on Tuesday, August 12, 2008
FOXBORO –– The New England Patriots saw two more players return to the field, as defensive linemen Jarvis Green and Mike Wright were removed from the unable-to-perform list and took part in their first practice of training camp.
Green underwent shoulder surgery during the offseason after starting a career-high 10 games and playing in all 19 last year. The seventh-year veteran recorded 64 tackles, 7 ½ sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
Good enough to be a starter on most other teams, Green’s return strengthens the already-solid defensive line, as does Wright’s.
Offensive linemen Stephen Neal and Oliver Ross are the only players still on the injury list.
Ex-Giant added to roster
Jeff Shoate wasn’t with the New York Giants very long last season, but he got a heck of a parting gift: a Super Bowl ring.
The 27-year old cornerback was on the Giants’ practice squad only for the playoffs last season, but was still given a ring by the team. But Shoate hasn’t seen the bauble yet; it arrived at his California home last weekand says his wife has been wearing it around the house.
Shoate has been trying to land with a new team, which he did Saturday, when he was signed by the Patriots after Tank Williams was lost for the season with a knee injury.
“Right now there’s a few guys that are down and it’s my job to step in and hopefully … make some plays and hopefully win a spot on the team,” he said. “No matter what team you’re with, when guys go down (and) you get a chance to get on the field, you have to take advantage of it right away.”
Shoate is considered a long shot to make the final roster.
Pats practice in the rain
The Patriots held their 19th and 20th practices of training camp yesterday, though the morning session was a walk-through. The night session was held in the rain inside Gillette Stadium in full pads; it was friends and family night for team employees.
There were 17 players missing last night: QB Matt Gutierrez, WR Kelley Washington, CB Jason Webster, CB Jonathan Wilhite, CB Antwain Spann, CB Lewis Sanders, CB Mike Richardson, S James Sanders, S Rodney Harrison, FB Kyle Eckel, T Ryan O’Callaghan, G/C Russ Hochstein, T Matt Light, TE Stephen Spach and WR Sam Aiken, as well as Neal and Ross.
Tom Brady took his regular snaps, marking the first time he’s been seen throwing a football since last Monday night.
The first-team linebackers were Mike Vrabel, Tedy Bruschi, Jerod Mayo and Adalius Thomas. Pierre Woods also took a couple of snaps with Vrabel, Bruschi and Mayo.
Stephen Gostkowski finished the night session going 7-for-7 on field goals ranging from 27 to 40 yards.
