Matt Cassel is AFC Offensive Player of the Week
07:58 AM EDT on Thursday, October 23, 2008
FOXBORO -- With success comes a little hardware.
New England quarterback Matt Cassel yesterday was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his 18-for-24, 185-yard, three-touchdown, zero-turnover performance against Denver on Monday night. Cassel had a career-high passer rating of 136.3, which is the fifth-highest passer rating in Pats’ history.
Baltimore LB Terrell Suggs was named defensive player of the week, while Oakland K Sebastian Janikowski got the nod for special teams.
Cassel is the first Patriot to claim a player of the week award this year. He beat out Buffalo QB Trent Edwards, Baltimore QB Joe Flacco, Houston WR Andre Johnson, Tennessee RBs Chris Johnson and LenDale White, and Pittsburgh RB Mewelde Moore for the honor.
Last year, a New England player was among the AFC weekly honorees 10 times, with five of those going to Tom Brady.
