New England Patriots
Patriots Notebook: Pro Bowl not atop the list of this team's priorities
01:00 AM EST on Wednesday, December 20, 2006
FOXBORO -- The day after finding out that only one Patriots player was chosen for the Pro Bowl -- defensive lineman Richard Seymour -- there was a considerable amount of talk about those players who are likely worthy of the honor but were overlooked.
Defensive linemen Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork , cornerback Asante Samuel , quarterback Tom Brady and special-teamer Larry Izzo were among those left out when the NFL named the 42 AFC representatives for the annual exhibition in Honolulu on Feb. 10.
"It's a great honor anytime you can go, but we don't have control of that," said Izzo, who has been to the Pro Bowl three times. "It's something that players only vote one-third, and you can't vote for your own teammates, but like I said, we can't control those type of things."
Izzo won the fan vote at his position, but the choices are made based on fan, players and coaches votes, each of which count for one-third. San Diego's Kassim Osgood was selected as the special-teams player.
Rosevelt Colvin agreed with Izzo.
"The Pro Bowl is something every player would like to have on his résumé, but guys here know what the goal is. The goal is to win the Super Bowl," he said. "You can't vote for your own teammates, but if I could, I would vote for every guy I line up with."
Brady had more pointed words about the snubs, and painted the situation with the respect brush.
"If other people who vote don't have the respect for this team, I think we're kind of used to that," he said. "After what we've accomplished, maybe people just choose not to vote (for New England players). I think this team cares about one bowl, and it's certainly not the Pro Bowl."
There still is a chance that more Patriots could make it as injury replacements or in place of others who bow out.
Just ask Charley
Don't bet on seeing Bill Belichick breaking Christmas bread with Charley Casserly this year.
During the CBS pregame show on Sunday, the panel was discussing Miami's claim that it used game tapes with audio to break down the Patriots' signals at the line of scrimmage and used them to get to Brady repeatedly.
Casserly, who until recently was the Texans' general manager, claimed that the Patriots had been warned by the NFL this season about having a team official in coaching gear standing on the sidelines with a video camera, allegedly taping opponents' signals.
Asked on Monday about Casserly's claim (Belichick said he hadn't heard anything from the league) and if it is illegal to have a camera on the sidelines, Belichick responded, "Why don't you go talk to Charley Casserly? He seems to have all the answers on everything, so why don't you go ask him?"
Yesterday, Belichick had on the boxing gloves. When he was asked about whether quarterbacks have been given too much protection by the officials, as has been charged by many players, Belichick initially said, "My background is as a defensive coach, so you can figure out what I think. But no one cares what I think."
Pressed further, Belichick told the questioner to approach the NFL officials who make those rules and adjustments.
"The Charley Casserleys of the world who have all the answers to everything, talk to them," he said, dropping some jaws in the room.
Who's the punter?
With two punters now on injured reserve, Belichick was asked about the team's situation at that position. While he did say that the team will have a punter before Sunday's game, he didn't say much about soon-to-be 45-year-old Sean Landeta , whom the team had in for a tryout on Tuesday.
As for practice squad punter Danny Baugher , Belichick wasn't saying whether the rookie, who has been with the team since Oct. 10, is in line for a promotion. But he did give him a bit of a thumbs-up, saying it's "possible" he'll be considered for a move up.
"I would say if they're here, they're doing positive things; if they're not here, then somebody's doing something better. Or maybe there's a need somewhere else. If they're here working, they're getting better, they're doing well," he said.
Baugher, an undrafted rookie out of Arizona, was a finalist for the 2005 Ray Guy Award, given to the nation's top collegiate punter. He averaged 42.1 yards per punt during his career with the Wildcats.
New England also signed another punter to the practice squad yesterday: rookie Tom Malone , who kicked for USC. Malone's career average was 44 yards; he spent most of May and June with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent.
Quick kicks
In the locker room yesterday, Kevin Faulk , who was heavily favoring his right knee after Sunday's game, said he's feeling "much better." His appearance during the media-access portion of practice backed that up. Rodney Harrison, Mike Vrabel and Laurence Maroney also were at practice. Benjamin Watson and Vince Wilfork were the absentees; players were in shells and shorts/sweatpants. . . . Bam Childress was named the practice player of the week for last week. . . . The team also re-signed defensive back James Patrick to the practice squad yesterday. . . . The first injury report of the week came out yesterday. For the Patriots, LB Eric Alexander (shoulder), S Rashad Baker (thigh), Faulk (knee), Harrison (shoulder), Maroney (back), T Ryan O'Callaghan (neck), Watson (knee), Wilfork (ankle) and DL Mike Wright (shoulder) are questionable. Brady (left shoulder), CB Ellis Hobbs (wrist) and Seymour (elbow) are probable. . . . For Jacksonville, DT Tony McDaniel (hip) and RB Fred Taylor (hamstring) are questionable. CB Ahmad Carroll (groin), LB Jorge Cordova (hamstring), P Chris Hanson (left hamstring), RB Maurice Jones-Drew (knee), G Vincent Manuwai (calf), RB Montell Owens (head), DTMarcus Stroud (ankle) and RB Derrick Wimbush (ankle) are probable.
