Brady leads Pats to 41-0 win over Washington

01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, August 26, 2006

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- A sharp Tom Brady played the same way he has all preseason. Unfortunately for winless Washington, so did Mark Brunell.

The Patriots quarterback starred in the first half while his Redskins counterpart struggled as New England rolled to a 41-0 win this evening.

Brady completed 17 of 30 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown to Benjamin Watson and led the Patriots to five scores on seven possessions before leaving after the first series of the second half with a 27-0 lead. In his other two games, Brady completed 18 of 24 passes.

Brunell, who also played seven series, hasn't led a scoring drive in any of his 11 this preseason and went 7-for-16 for 51 yards. Backups Todd Collins and Jason Campbell also struggled.

Brunell, who aggravated a groin injury Thursday, was sacked three times by a defense that extended to nine quarters its streak of not allowing a touchdown. New England beat Arizona 30-3 a week ago.

The Patriots (2-1) got impressive performances from two rookies.

First-round pick Laurence Maroney scored the first touchdown on a 5-yard run. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski, who beat out veteran Martin Gramatica after Adam Vinatieri joined Indianapolis as a free agent, was perfect on two field goal attempts and five extra points and is 6-for-6 on field goals and 9-for-9 on extra points.

Watson, with 31 receptions in his first two seasons, had eight for 97 yards and the Patriots second touchdown, giving them a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Both teams ended last season one game away from their conference championship games and Washington (0-3) added wide receivers Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd in the offseason. But they combined for just two catches Saturday.

The Redskins defended the pass as poorly as they did the run a week earlier when they allowed 145 yards rushing in the first half of a 27-14 loss to the New York Jets. Against the Patriots, they gave up 193 yards passing in the first half.

That bodes poorly for the regular season since first-stringers usually get their most playing time in the next to last exhibition game. Washington faces Baltimore on Thursday night and opens the season against Minnesota on Sept. 11. New England's last exhibition game is Thursday night at the New York Giants.

The Patriots got catches from just two wide receivers in the first three quarters on Deion Branch's 30th day as a holdout. The team has given its best receiver until next Friday to seek a trade and negotiate with another team.

New England scored on its first two possessions on Gostkowski's 23-yard field goal and Maroney's run.

Five minutes into the second quarter, John Hall's 43-yard field goal attempt for Washington was blocked by Richard Seymour before Watson scored on the next series. Another 23-yarder by Gostkowski made it 20-0 at halftime. Heath Evans scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and Patrick Cobbs scored on two 1-yard runs in the fourth.

Notes: ILB Junior Seau, in his ninth day with the Patriots, started in place of Monty Beisel, who is healthy and trying to make the team after starting six games last season. ... Washington RB Clinton Portis missed his second game with a shoulder injury but should be ready for the opener. ... Patriots RB Corey Dillon didn't return after being poked in the eye in the first quarter. ... T.J. Duckett had 8 yards on four carries three days after being traded from Atlanta to Washington.
