Tom Curran's Draft Card: Ashton Youboty
01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, April 12, 2006
Leading up to the NFL Draft, The Journal's Tom E. Curran will profile a player at a "need" position for the Patriots each day. New England has 10 picks in the draft, six in the first four rounds. Their first-round pick is the 21st overall. Profiles are based on our own analysis and interviews, various draft resources and Pro Football Weekly's 2006 Draft Preview book.
TODAY'S PROFILE:
ASHTON YOUBOTY
POSITION: Cornerback.
COLLEGE: Ohio State.
HEIGHT: 6 feet
WEIGHT: 189 pounds.
TIME IN THE 40: 4.5
THE LOWDOWN
Coming out after his junior season. He started 12 games in 2005 and made 56 tackles with 9 breakups and a pick. He was more productive statistically as a junior with 61 tackles, 14 breakups and 4 picks. Played behind OSU standout Chris Gamble in 2003. Ohio State has had a string of strong corner prospects and, playing against good competition in the Big Ten, Youboty was challenged.
THE PROS
Long and angular with a penchant for coming up hard in run support and putting the ballcarrier on the ground. Reads plays well. He's fluid and changes direction easily and takes good angles. Between playing against Ted Ginn Jr. and Santonio Holmes every day in practice and the great Michigan receivers of the past few seasons, Youboty's gone against quality competition.
THE CONS
Could have issues dealing with smaller receivers because of his height. Needs to become more mentally durable and has to learn to put bad plays behind him. He's on the slight side so his durability against bigger backs and tight ends bringing more heft will be a concern.
COULD HE BE A PATRIOT?
Youboty is a borderline project. He's played plenty and has been very good, but needs refinement to reach his potential. And his potential is very high. If he doesn't get good coaching and the ability to ease into his spot, he could be victimized early and carry the scars of that with him. Youboty is seen as a first-round candidate, but he doesn't seem to fit New England's profile. The Pats like tough, productive leaders more than guys who show potential. Draft Youboty and you're buying on speculation.
