Dog Notes: Local winners abound in recent shows

Ch. Linn-Lee’s for the Good Times, an almost 2-year-old Pekingese owned and bred by Erna G. Holcombe and Charlotte Carter of Morris, Ala., was Best In Show winner at both the April 25 and 26 dog shows sponsored by South County Kennel Club.
The AKC-sanctioned show was held at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln.
There were several local winners over the weekend as well.
Winning Sporting Group II on Saturday and Sporting Group I on Sunday was Ch. Reidwood Red Alert, an English setter owned by Georgette Perry of Portsmouth.
Winning Terrier Group II on Saturday was Ch. Avalon Eclipse, a smooth fox terrier owned by Norra Hansen, Dan Buchwald and Mrs. W.H. Stout of Foster.
Winner of Toy Group III on Saturday and Toy Group IV on Sunday, Ch. Teabear’s Royal Penguin, a Japanese Chin owned by L.J. “Kip’’ Kopatch of Greene.
Herding Group IV on Saturday was taken by Ch. Inchallah’s City Lights, a Belgian Sheepdog owned by Susan and Joseph Hanrahan of Coventry.
On Sunday, winning Sporting Puppy Group III was Camelot’s the Best of Times, a Weimaraner owned and bred by Susan Thomas of Ashaway.
Greyhaven Summer Wine, a borzoi owned by Marianne and Ken Knight of Foster, won Hound Puppy Group II.
Terrier Puppy Group I was won by Wes-Tee’s Igor, a West Highland White Terrier owned by Lisbeth Manuel of Hope Valley.
Toy Group Puppy II was won by Teabear’s I’m Just a Material Gull, a Japanese Chin owned by Rozanne Aldride and Kopatch.
Toy Group Puppy IV was won by Oak Ledge Heart of My Heart, a Papillon owned by Kathleen Augaitis of Greene.
CastleRock Shajas Marshall Dillon, a Cairn Terrier owned by Arlene and Richard Grant and Sheila and Jim Fitzgerald of Foster, earned a Best of Breed award.
In the Junior Showmanship division, winners were: Novice Intermediate, 2nd place, Evanlake Christmas Star, Tibetan Spaniel, Olivia Kutsaftis of Newport.

If Spot loves playing Frisbee, he’s in luck. A disc dog competition will be held Sunday at Burrillville Middle School, Route 102, in Harrisville.
Registration starts at 9 a.m. followed by the competition at 9:30. Entry fee is $10. Bring a lawnchair for yourself and water for your dog.

On April 19th, Ch. Game CrWaterways Kylends LC Mary CDX CGC RE NA , handled by Ralph Baker of Rehoboth, made her qualified pass in the AKC’s Junior Hunting test at Patriot Sporting Spaniel Club in Royalston, Mass. Merry is an American Water Spaniel owned by Avis Prior, also of Rehoboth.

The North Kingstown Pet Refuge will hold its 3rd annual Dog Walk at Goddard Park on Sunday, May 3.
Registration for the Walk begins at noon followed by the walk at 1 p.m. Cost is $20. There will be raffles and t-shirts available and participants will receive snacks at the end of the walk. Walkers without dogs are also welcome. For information, go to www.nkeapl.org/DogWalk.html.
Rabies clinic
A low-cost rabies clinic is being held today from 10 a.m. to noon at the West Greenwich highway garage, 280 Victory Highway (Route 102). Cost is $10.
All dogs must be leashed and cats and ferrets must be in carriers.
Training classes
Beginner agility classes are being held on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. at Woodwind Farm in Cranston. For information, call (401) 323-0452.
South County Kennel Club and Delmyra Country Club for Dogs holds a one-hour breed-handling class on Wednesdays at 7:15 p.m. at Delmyra, 191 Ten Rod Rd., Exeter. Instructor is Tony Raposo.
Drop-in breed handling classes with Karen Manchester are being held on Thursdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at Cozy Paws Pet Resort & Training Center (Route 3), Exeter. For information, call (401) 397-6198.
The K9 Connection is holding drop-in rally run-throughs on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Drop-in agility run-throughs are held Fridays at 7:30 p.m.

The Canine Training Center, 71A Wheaton Ave., Rehoboth, will hold drop-in rally classes Mondays at 6 p.m., followed by advanced obedience classes at 7:30.
Breed-handling and junior-showmanship classes will be held Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., followed by beginner/puppy obedience classes at 7:30.
On Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., beginner/puppy obedience classes will be held.

The Key Dog Training Club of Rhode Island is holding novice and open obedience classes every Tuesday at 3 p.m., followed by beginner and puppy classes at 5:30 and 6:30, open and utility at 7:15, and novice rally at 8. Classes are held at Rocky Hill Grange, 1340 South County Trail, East Greenwich.
