Outdoor notes: North Kingstown’s Barbour reaches special-hunting milestone
Doctors advised him not to go, but flintlock hunter Richard Barbour Jr., of North Kingstown, has completed his 30th special deer hunting season on Prudence Island. “I had major back surgery July 27,” Barbour said in an e-mail before last week’s special season for paraplegic hunters. “I had to have eight vertebrae fused and titanium rods, a plate and screws put in. Needless to say, it’s been a pretty roughcouple of months. I’m told it will take up to a year to fully heal from the surgery. On top of this, I developed a rotator cuff problem in my right arm which is making getting around pretty painful.” Barbour uses a wheelchair to get around. “I couldn’t get out of bed last weekend,between the back and arm pain, but I’m hoping that was weather related as I feel much better now.” Sometimes, it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

The state Division of Fish and Wildlife is stocking 67,000 trout in more than 100 streams and ponds for Opening Day of trout-fishing season Saturday. Creepy crawly critters for kids, Tuesday at Audubon in Smithfield
SMITHFIELD –– The giant African millipede curled up in Kim Calcagno’s palm. It looked like an overstuffed, hard-shell worm with an insect’s head and many –– very many –– legs. The one in her hand was only about five or six inches long, but the millipede can grow to more than a foot long, and then it looks more snaky than wormy. Besides curling up to defend itself, the giant African millipede secretes hydrochloric acid, stinging predators and tasting terrible.

Shotgun deer season near
Rhode Island’s shotgun season for taking either-sex and antlerless deer opens on the mainland Saturday and continues through Dec. 14. An antlerless deer is a female or a male with antlers less than three inches long.

Bounty of trails awaits hikers at Coventry’s Kettle Pond

Southern New England’s sport-fishing community gathered in Narragansett last weekend to share stories and memories of Richard “Dick” Lema. He was an extraordinary sportsman, formerly of South County, who died at his Florida home late last month.

Smithfield man earns high praise
At its annual meeting held recently at Garden in the Woods in Framingham, Mass., The New England Wild Flower Society presented the Rhode Island State Award for Conserving Native Plants and Their Habitats to Peter Lockwood of Smithfield for dedicated, extensive and precise studies of the flora of Rhode Island, leading to the discovery of new rare and endangered species. He has contributed his skills to the Rhode Island Association of Wetland Scientists, the Rhode Island Natural History Survey and the Rhode Island Task Force of New England Plant Conservation Program, the society said.

Saltwater permits group to meet
The state Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association (RISAA) have launched a group to study saltwater fishing permits. The group is scheduled to hold its first public meeting tomorrow from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Coventry-West Greenwich Elks Club.

Riding with the Wheelmen
It was my first ride with the Wheelmen, although I've always done a lot of bicycling. Living near the East Bay Bike Path, with its marked miles, I knew I could do a 20-to 30-mile ride, even if I was a bit rusty after a winter of inactivity.
