Smoke-ban ricochet

01:00 AM EST on Monday, February 28, 2005

Well, the comments of Margaret Kane, executive director of the Rhode Island chapter of the American Lung Association, must be of comfort to our local restaurateurs and other hospitality businesses ("Bill hearing postponed but shouting goes on," news, Feb. 18). She asserted that, despite the downturn in the restaurant/hospitality industry in every other state where smoking bans have been implemented (six of them), Rhode Island (with its higher-than-average percentage of smokers) will be somehow spared.

At least she's aware that, so far, smoking bans have caused economic damage.
