Cluster of cells, with or without souls

01:00 AM EST on Saturday, December 11, 2004

We are all indebted to David O'Connell for his well-written, disarmingly honest Dec. 4 letter in opposition to U.S. Rep. James Langevin's support of embryonic stem cell research.

O'Connell bases his opposition to such research on the very questionable theological concept of the "soul," a concept unproven and unprovable. Speculation on the existence of the soul is intellectually stimulating, but should not be the basis for public policy in our pluralistic society. Rather, policy should be rooted in rationality and humanitarianism.

In the opinion of countless scientific experts, embryonic stem-cell research can lead to effective treatment and even cures for a whole host of horrific diseases that afflict children and adults alike. Putting the well-being of a cluster of cells, with or without souls, over the interests of our suffering loved ones is not rational, nor is it humane.
