Ellen Lenox Smith: Don’t joke about marijuana
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, July 5, 2009
I am sure Brenda Bedrick (“Drugged by solons,” letter, June 24) is a nice person, but she should not beat up on people who are already down. In her frustration over Rhode Island government, she suggested that it would be nice to get some legalized marijuana and then she wouldn’t care.
That comment went up my spine. I am one of the over 600 people in the state considered critically ill enough that that medicine is what is keeping me alive and having more time with my family and friends. Other drugs are not an option with all my allergies and reactions. And she is comfortable making a joke about its use?
My hat is off to the General Assembly, which had the courage to help us with our medicine and provide us with compassion centers to purchase the medicine we need safely.
