In his Nov. 23 Commentary piece “Are the Russians lying about sub disaster?”, James R. Holmes discounts the Russian story by stating that Freon could not have caused the disaster because Freon is a refrigerant and not a firefighting agent.
As a Naval War College professor he should know that Freon is a trade name for a large number of compounds containing fluorine. While some are refrigerants, there are many other uses and those containing bromine (also known as Halons) are among the most commonly used firefighting compounds, especially on naval vessels.
