John Melone: Shoveling snow, cleaning toilets

01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Michael Morse, a member of the Providence Fire Department, in his June 1 letter “Union Bashing has gotten out of hand,” says it all.

He thought he was being cute when he said, “I wonder if part of his [Fred Deusch’s] duties in the factory, include shoveling snow, scrubbing floors and toilets, etc.”

That’s the trouble with union members. They think certain jobs are beneath them.

What’s wrong with a firefighter shoveling snow and cleaning toilets in his spare time? We all know they have plenty of spare time. There’s only so much shine you can put on a fire truck.
